Interpol issues ‘red notice’ for accused ex-FIFA bosses

Interpol has issued ‘Red Notices’ – the closest tool that exists to an international arrest warrant – for two former FIFA officials and four corporate executives.

The six men involved are ex-FIFA vice-president Jack Warner, Nicolas Leoz, Alejandro Burzaco, Hugo and Mariano Jinkis and José Margulies.

According to Interpol “Red Notices are one of the ways in which INTERPOL informs its member countries that an arrest warrant has been issued for an individual by a judicial authority and seeks the location and arrest of wanted persons with a view to extradition or similar lawful action.”

Yesterday (Tuesday), the president of FIFA, Sepp Blatter, stepped down just days after his re-election to the head of international football’s governing body after revelations of corruption in the highest echelons of FIFA. Media reports in the US suggest Blatter himself is the subject of an FBI investigation.

Interpol cannot arrest people subject to Red Notices, but can help national police forces to identify and locate them “with a view to extradition or similar lawful action.”

The suspects

  • Jack Warner: Trinidad & Tobago national, former FIFA vice president and executive committee member, CONCACAF president, CFU president and Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) special adviser.
  • Nicolás Leoz: Paraguayan national, former FIFA executive committee member and CONMEBOL president.
