Mexico Averaging Nearly 100 Murders a Day

In Mexico State alone 1,257 homicides occurred in the first four months of this year.

In the first four months of this year, an average of 98 people were murdered each day in Mexico, a new study has shown.

Figures released by the executive secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP) reveal that 11,836 homicides were committed in the first third of 2015, with most occurring in Mexico State, with 1,257; followed by Guanajuato with 885; Guerrero with 831; and Michoacan with 714 registered murders.

SESNSP also released data around kidnappings, of which 448 were registered from January to April, and 1,826 reports of extortion, according to statistics gained from attorneys’ offices and public prosecutors across the country.    

Violence in Mexico has been making daily headlines since 43 students from the Ayotzinapa teacher training college were forcibly disappeared after protestingin the state of Guerrero, after which a string of mass graves were found in the surrounding area.

Most recently, ambiguity still surrounds an incident in Michoacan state in which authorities claim to have killed 42 members of a drug cartelin a shootout. Some believe this to have been a massacre of innocent people.
