Teen Sentenced To 40 Years In Prison For Drowning 2-Month-Old Baby

A teenager from Dallas, Texas, who was 14 years old at the time she drowned a 2-month-old baby who was in her mother's care, was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

The young girl, whose name has not been released because she is 15, confessed to killing infant Justice Hull in January, reports My Fox Houston. As a result, she waived her right to a trial by jury and received the maximum sentence. She was not tried as an adult and may be eligible for parole when she is 19.

The teen admitted to police that, on Jan. 26, she picked up the infant while she was sleeping, carried her into the family's bathroom, and drowned her in a bowl of water.

She said she had contemplated doing it because she didn't want her mother to adopt the child and that she made the decision to go through with it the day before.

The teen's mother was given temporary custody of Justice while the baby's mother was in jail.

According to a Child Protective Services report, the mother had twice requested additional help in caring for the infant because she had to work and her 19-year-old son, who watched the baby, was returning to school. The two teen daughters were at home on the day the fatal drowning took place.

"Based on the facts of the case, I can't be shocked and surprised by it," the teen's defense attorney reportedly told 11 Alive after hearing the verdict. "The victim was in the last hearing — her having the opportunity to remain in the juvenile system, to still go to school, to receive counseling that she obviously needs."
