Study Indicates Abortion Increases Risk of Breast Cancer

Biochemical researchers at Georgia Regents University revealed earlier this week research that linked abortion to higher increases in breast cancer among women, reports LifeNews.

According to the study, pregnant women produce high levels of the gene DNMT1 – responsible for maintaining breast, or mammary, stem cells that enable breasts rapid growth during pregnancy – which also produces stem cells that may cause breast cancer. The average woman will produce 300 times more of these mammary stem cells during pregnancy, becoming breast cells as they increase in size. This also happens during puberty.

When a pregnant woman producing heavy amounts these stem cells either has an abortion or unfortunately suffers a miscarriage, the immature cells slated to become future breast cells have increased chances of becoming cancerous.

Though the scientists could not quite understand why, the study also showed that women who get their first pregnancy after age 30 also have an increased risk of breast cancer.

Women who never have children also are at increased risk,

while multiple term pregnancies further decrease the risk, according to the American Cancer Society,” the researchers said in a statement.

The research echoes findings from a Chinese study in 2013 that showed women with just one abortion had a 44% increase in breast cancer while women with two abortions had 76% increase. Three or more abortions, and the increased risk only doubled.

LIFE, a pro-life group in Britain, has since hailed the study as cautionary discoveries that women should be warned of.

“This is the type of research we have been calling for,” LIFE spokeswoman Anne Scanlan. “There are over 50 studies showing a link between abortion and breast cancer. Now this study shows possible biological causation and we would therefore urge the medical research community in the UK to engage in greater scientific investigation.”

“For too long this issue has not been taken seriously despite the large number of studies pointing to a link,” she continued. “We have to act in the best interest of women and if there are long term health risks associated with induced abortion, it is right,
