Florist Receives $100,000 In Donations After Refusing To Service A Gay Couple s Wedding

The Washington state florist who refused to provide services for a gay couple's wedding has netted more than $100,000 through a crowdfunding campaign.

The Washington state florist who refused to provide services for a gay couple's wedding has netted more than $100,000 through a crowdfunding campaign.

In February, a Benton County Superior Court judge ruled that Barronelle Stutzman, 70, violated the Consumer Protection Act when she refused to provide flowers for a gay couple's wedding ceremony in 2013.

Stutzman, owner of Arlene's Flowers in Richland, Washington, was ordered to pay $1,000 in fines and $1 in costs and fees. The judge also ordered her to comply with Washington State law and provide goods and all other services to both same-sex and other couples.

But Stutzman stood by her Southern Baptist beliefs, which frowns upon same-sex marriages.

"It's about freedom, not money," Stutzman wrote in a letter to Attorney General Bob Ferguson on Feb. 20. "I certainly don't relish the idea of losing my business, my home and everything else that your lawsuit threatens to take from my family, but my freedom to honor God in doing what I do best is more important."

Now, a GoFundMe page that was set up for Stutzman has raised more than $100,000 from more than 2,700 donors aiming to "protect her and her livelihood," The Seattle Times reports.

The page was set up in February, but nearly one-half the money was donated over the weekend of April 4 and 5.

Supporters compared the campaign to one set up for Memories Pizza, an Indiana pizzeria that closed after the owner also said in a TV interview she would refuse to provide services for gay weddings in the wake of the state's heavily debated "religious freedom" law.

The crowdfunding page for Memories Pizza raised more than $842,000 in two days.
