Oleg Shein, a representative of Just Russia opposition party, and a group of supporters, went on a hunger strike protesting alleged fraud in a mayoral election in the city of Astrakhan, in the south of Russia. Shein lost the election to a rival from a pro-Kremlin party. His supporters refer to their leader as "Jesus of the Russian Revolution." Opposition activists have already started collecting money for those, who would like to come to Astrakhan to support Shein, but are unable to do it for financial reasons. In the meantime, common residents of Astrakhan continue to ignore Oleg Shein's protest, who claims that he received the support from over 100,000 people in the election. A group of opposition activists arrived in Astrakhan soon after the news about Shein's hunger strike was made public. On the one hand, practically all federal media covered the events in Astrakhan in their reports. On the other hand, the information attack has not impressed local residents at all.

It appears that people simply ignore Shein's hunger games. One may come to this conclusion judging upon the number of those people, who took part in yesterday's meetings in the city. For example, Dmitry Gudkov, a deputy of Just Russia, said that there were approximately 600 people participating in the final meeting yesterday. Ilya Barabanov, a correspondent of The New York Times, counted not more than 300-400 people.

According to official information, Shein received the support from 60,000 residents of Astrakhan. It is worthy of note that nearly a half of those participating in the meetings were not Astrakhan natives - they arrived from Moscow. At the end of the day, if Mikhail Stolyarov's victory (Shein's rival and the election winner), who enjoyed the support of 60% of Astrakhan residents, had been based on fraud, one would have seen mass meetings taking place in the city indeed. Nothing like that is happening. "Common people can only careless about that. People think about picnics, they think about fishing, rather than political protests," an Astrakhan blogger wrote. "Should I declare myself the mayor of Astrakhan and go on a hunger strike too? The people, who have not been eating for three days, can not run around with cameras faster than me," mihail-nesterov, another blogger wrote. The majority of Astrakhan residents don't care about all who struggle only for their personal interests.

I personally didn't give them any right to decide for me whom I support and whom I don't," he continued. For the time being, Shein's supporters from Moscow spend time in Astrakhan the way they can. On Wednesday morning, opposition activists found their own unique weapon against the authorities. "They put a couple of mattresses on Kirov Square and started a sit-down strike against the fraud during the mayoral election," Ilya Yashin wrote. Lev Pravin Pravda.Ru Read the original in Russian  .
